This machine accurately measures the shape of the front of the eye (the cornea) to help us fit contact lenses, assess dry eye, allow infrared imaging of the meibomian glands within the lids, and diagnose and monitor corneal disease such as keratoconus. It is especially useful to monitor the corneal reshaping process when you are fitted with orthokeratology contact lenses.

One of the most important technologies developed over the last decade for eye care, an OCT scans the layers of the eye to accurately diagnose and monitor ocular disease and assist with fitting specialty contact lenses. Our advanced device simultaneous takes a digital image of the retinal during scans for improved efficiency.

This device is what our therapeutic optometrists use to examine your eyes under high magnification. Our top-of-the-line biomicroscope uses LED illumination and has an advanced Canon SLR camera attached for photography and video of your eye conditions.

In 2025 Bay Eye Care continued to invest in cutting edge dry-eye treatments with the acquisition of our Lipiflow thermal pulsation therapy, the first in Tauranga. Lipiflow is an in-clinic treatment that directly heats up the clogged oils within the lids, and uses a gentle pulsation pressure to express these glands, thereby improving tear function.

Bay Eye Care was the first practice in Tauranga that invested in an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) device for treating dry eye in 2017. Since then many patient’s have been safely treated to improve their dry eye disease. This machine directs sequenced light pulses to stimulate the oil glands in the eyelids and help them regain more normal function.

New to the clinic in late 2018, Bay Eye Care is the first practice in the area to use the TearLab system to measure the osmolarity (concentration of salts) of your tears - a proven biomarker for dry eye disease.

In conditions like glaucoma and retinal disease it is very important to be able to measure how well your peripheral vision is working. Although this testing is not thrilling to perform our modern visual field machines make the process as efficient and accurate as possible.

Measuring the pressure of the fluid in the eye (IOP) is one of the most important components of an eye examination. Monitoring IOP over time is essential to manage the condition glaucoma. Unlike older technologies that require numbing of the eye or use an uncomfortable jet of air, we have the newest ICare device which can barely be felt during measurement.

Blepharitis can be a challenging condition to control as the build up of debris on the lash margin can be difficult to remove with treatments at home. We use a specialised BlephEx tool to gently remove this inflammatory material in our practice with a motorised medical microsponge, offering welcome relief for patients.

Gone are the days of having your vision and prescription checked at the optometrist with what looks and feels like a medieval instrument of torture. At Bay Eye Care we use computerised charts, remotes and lenses to speed up the process and ensure the measurements we find are as accurate as possible.
